History

Founded in 1914, the San Antonio Zoo was one of the first zoos in the United States to use cageless exhibits. In addition, it was the first zoo to successfully breed endangered species. Today, the San Antonio Zoo is a premier center for education, conservation, and research. It is accredited by the Zoological Association of America, and hosts more than a million visitors each year.

The San Antonio Zoo was founded by Colonel George W. Brackenridge, who was a leading citizen of San Antonio. He also founded the San Antonio Express-News and was a key contributor to city history. He deeded land to the city of San Antonio for Brackenridge Park. Brackenridge Park became the San Antonio Zoo in 1928.
